Kulpsville, PA, U.S.A. (July 2008)--Greene, Tweed has been awarded a patent for their unique Enercam design. The Enercam features Greene, Tweed's Avalon® PTFE material as a sealing element coupled with a high modulus, angled, anti-extrusion back-up ring and a custom-designed, elastomeric-energizer element. The Enercam's unidirectional, hydro-mechanically activated, cam-type design provides optimum sealing performance and extended service life for a variety of aerospace applications.

The Enercam is a demonstrated solution for both Skydrol® V and military red oil systems that operate up to 5,000 psi. Low leakage rates guarantee hydraulic fluid will be available to operate the flight controls. The Enercam provides good wear and deformation resistance, allowing for lower maintenance requirements and longer mean time between actuator overhaul, which leads to lower operating expenses. Because the Enercam can be installed in a closed groove it can easily be retrofitted, reducing complex maintenance procedures.

When combined with the ESE seal, the Enercam creates a tandem sealing system that provides a wide temperature range (-65°F to 275°F/-54°C to 135°C) and performs well in systems with varied viscosity levels. As a tandem design, the ESE seal offers excellent performance in low temperatures and viscous fluid while the Enercam provides unhindered performance when fluids become less viscous. In addition, the tandem design prevents pressure traps from occurring within the hydrocylinder as well as any subsequent system locking.

Matt James, engineering manager of Greene, Tweed's Aerospace Business, notes, "Our tandem design is unique in the market. No one else provides this level of performance in viscous fluids and fluctuating temperatures." The sealing assembly performs equally well in both red oil and Skydrol applications. The Enercam-ESE tandem seal design is primarily installed in flight control applications.

The Enercam is just the most recent in a line of innovative designs for the aerospace market. Greene, Tweed has received many patents for their seal designs in the aerospace market including those for their ACT® ring and RSR® seal.

Greene, Tweed leverages expertise in a variety of markets and products to give customers the most innovative solutions to meet performance challenges and reduce total cost of operation.
